David M. Bailey, 1966-2010

| October 10th, 2010 | No Comments »

David Mark Bailey, 44, of Earlysville, died of brain cancer on October 2, 2010 in Charlottesville, VA and was welcomed into everlasting life at his place at the Table with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Born February 26, 1966, David was the son of Kenneth and Ethel Bailey, missionaries to the Middle East.  For the first 22 years of his life, his home was Beirut, Lebanon, including the first ten years of the Lebanese civil war.  Because of war, the family was obliged to evacuate first to Switzerland (1967), and later to Cyprus (1982).  David’s two final years of high school were completed in a private school in Germany because he was, as a young man, especially vulnerable on the streets of Beirut.

David attended Grove City College in western Pennsylvania, where he met and married his soul mate, Leslie McGarvey, of Emlenton, PA.  During his college years he was active as a performing songwriter, playing evening and weekend gigs with a music partner.  He also enjoyed choir, frat life, acting, and organizing an underground newspaper.  David graduated with majors in English and Communication Arts.  In the late 80’s, David and Leslie relocated to the Washington, D.C. area where David worked for the U.S. government in satellite imagery analysis.  His career evolved to training and then program management with numerous software subcontractors, ending with employment with Eastman Software in Massachusetts.  Their daughter, Kelcey, was born in 1992 and son, Cameron, in 1994.

The day prior to moving to the Boston area, in July of 1996, David was diagnosed with brain cancer – Glioblastoma Multiforme IV (GBM).  He was expected to have fewer than two years to live.  Eager to have his life make a difference in the lives of others, he gave up his career in the software industry and, with a great leap of faith, launched a third career as a performing songwriter – a “troubadour of hope.”  Following two surgeries, radiation, experimental chemotherapy and nuclear therapy, David criss-crossed America (and Europe) singing in coffee houses and churches, for cancer conferences and cancer survivor groups for 12 years.  David wrote all of his own songs, which grew out of his experiences of war and of battling a deadly cancer.  He sang of faith, hope, love and of living life to its fullest each day.  He experienced a recurrence of brain cancer in late 2008, recovering enough to tour in 2009 and early 2010.  Enduring numerous additional surgeries and difficult treatments, David made a final tour in July of this year.

David is survived by Leslie, his wife of 23 years; his children, Kelcey and Cameron; his parents, Kenneth and Ethel Bailey; a sister, Sara Makari and her husband, Victor; numerous sisters- and brothers-in-law and eight nieces and nephews.  To quote a line from one of David’s songs, “The tears of the angels form a river where you can wash your pain, and even in the middle of the thunder, don’t forget the love inside the rain.”  His theme was “There may be years of tears behind you, but right now you’ve got One More Day.”  He leaves behind him a musical legacy of 23 professionally-recorded CDs.  His music and his personal testimony have affected the lives of countless thousands in this country and around the world.

The family offers deep gratitude to Drs. Henry Friedman, Allan Friedman and David Reardon at Duke and Dr. David Schiff at UVa and their caring staffs.  We also offer loving thanks to our family of caregivers at the Hospice House, Hospice of the Piedmont, Charlottesville.  Memorial gifts are welcome and may be made to Blue Ridge Presbyterian Church, 6566 Spring Hill Road, Ruckersville, VA  22968.  Half of those gifts will be equally divided between the following brain tumor organizations:  The American Brain Tumor Association, the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke, Gray Matters Foundation, the Florida Brain Tumor Association and T.H.E. Brain Trust.

David was a charter member and Elder at Blue Ridge Presbyterian Church in Ruckersville, VA, where he co-chaired the Evangelism Committee.  Baptized into the Covenant, he was a lifelong Christian and we will have a Celebration of his life and of the Resurrection at a Memorial Service on Tuesday, October 19, 2010 at 2:00 pm at Meadows Presbyterian Church in Charlottesville, VA.  His daughter suggests an attire of tie-dye, if you like.  David would be wearing jeans and ask you to check out his website, www.davidmbailey.com.

MINDS OVER MATTER Sag Harbor 5k Run: Wrap Up & Upcoming Events!

| May 14th, 2010 | No Comments »

I want to take this opportunity to thank all of our runners, volunteers and sponsors who came out for the 2010 MOM 5k Race in Sag Harbor this past Saturday. Despite the on and off rain, 236 runners crossed the line and at this point, it looks like we have raised over $12,000, all of which will go towards GLK’s yearly goal of $50,000. All donations will help fund our three year $75,000 commitment to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, GLK’s annual caregiver grant, and scholarships at Pierson High School and Pace University’s School of Nursing. It is because of all of you that GLK and MINDS OVER MATTER are able to continue our journey in finding a cure for brain tumors. Race results can be found at http://www.flrrt.com/results/results.html.

Thank you again to Laurie DeVito and her 4th grade art class for designing the 2010 race t-shirt where “Everyone’s A Winner!” Jordan (my sister) and I had a great time at Sag Harbor Elementary’s Morning Sing this past Friday and we hope to make the MOM 5k t-shirt design an island-wide competition from now on each year!

NOW, I would like to give a very special thanks to John Cottrell of Town Line Tech Solutions - http://townlinetech.com - for generously extending his expertise, acting as our technical advisor, both managing and designing GLK’s website and online registration system for the past two years. GLK would not be where we are without your talents! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

Race pictures will be posted on www.glkfoundation.org by the end of May.

Bob-O Star: James Griffin

| April 7th, 2010 | 1 Comment »

The Gwen L. Kosinski Foundation would like to recognize those who continually make our foundation a running success. This week, GLK would like to honor James Griffin as our first Bob-O STAR! As many of you know, Robert “Bob-O” Conneely was the original founder of MINDS OVER MATTER who lost his twenty-six year battle with brain cancer in January of 2009. It is in Bob-O’s name that we honor these amazing individuals.

Our first star!

A conversation with James Griffin, interviewed by his daughter, Katie Griffin.

From Left to Right: Grandson Little Jimmy Griffin, Jim Griffin, Son Joe Griffin, Wife Anna Griffin and Daughter Katie Griffin.

Q: You are the recipient of the first ever MINDS OVER MATTER race season Bob-O award! Congratulations! You knew Robert “Bob-O” Conneely. If you had to describe Bob-O in three words, what would they be?

A: Determined, Courageous, Survivor

Q: MINDS OVER MATTER made its debut as a little team of six at the 2001 NYC Marathon. You were on that team. What memories do have from that day?

A: I have lots of memories from that November 4, 2001. It being just two months since the September 11th attacks, I remember seeing the smoke from Ground Zero as I was crossing the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. I remember running through various neighborhoods and hearing lots of different kinds of music while I ran through the five boroughs.

I remember riding over with the MINDS OVER MATTER team to the beginning of the race and I remember meeting up with everyone afterward to attempt to watch the World Series game that was on that night, only to find that we were all too tired!

This was the first race and the beginning of my involvement with GLK/MOM. I believe we are making a strong contribution towards a cure for brain tumors.

Q: You have been friends with John Kosinski since living as housemates at Villanova. Thus, you knew Gwen Kosinski for whom the GLK Foundation is named. What do you think she would think of all this eight years after her passing?

A: I remember that Gwen was not a person who liked to call a lot of attention to herself, so I think that she would be quietly proud of the accomplishments of the GLK Foundation. She fought bravely against her two tumors and her legacy is the terrific family she left behind.

Q: You currently live in New Hampshire. What is your main focus on the home-front? GLK heard you just started a new business. What is the premise of that business?

A: I am currently an Independent Manufacturer Representative for the Electronic Industry. I represent two companies and sell their products and services throughout the Northeast. At present I am considering adding a third product line.

Q: You have always been a family man. Married to Anna for how many years now? And two kids, a grandchild…. What has been your greatest joy in being a husband and father?

A: Anna and I will be married 36 years this August. My greatest joy in being a husband and father is the loving relationships that I have with my wonderful wife, my children and my grandson!

Q: You love to run. Where is your favorite place to run? It is also a known fact that you are an avid golfer. I hear you and all your Villanova friends are turning 60 this year and heading to Ireland for a collaborative birthday-golf celebration. What course (or courses) over there are you most looking forward to playing?

A: My favorite place to run in the entire world is along Broadmeadow Estuary in Malahide, Ireland. This is a seacoast run with great views and cool crisp air. We lived in Malahide for a short time, twenty years ago. My favorite place to run in the United States is in Central Park, New York. The run seems to go quickly and all the sights and sounds of the City are still exciting to me.

For our 60th birthday-golf celebration, I am most excited to play the Old Head and Doonbeg courses, since I have not played them yet. But I really just can’t wait to play the courses in Ireland again.

Q: Over the past year, you have become a cancer survivor. How has the personal diagnosis of having cancer impacted you? Has it changed you at all?

A: As a cancer survivor I am more appreciative of living healthy everyday.

Q: What in your opinion is your greatest lifetime achievement to date?

A: Our greatest achievement is our long, wonderful loving marriage.

Q: And lastly, when you leave this Earth… How would you like to be remembered?

A: I would like to be remembered as a good husband and father and friend who enjoyed life, music and sports!

Minds Over Matter 5K Run

Hello Runners, Friends, and Sponsors!

Get ready to lace up those running shoes and give the MAN 2 BEAT a run for his money because this year EVERYONE’S A WINNER!

The 7th Annual MINDS OVER MATTER Sag Harbor 5k Run will take place Saturday May 8, 2010 at 8:30am. As always, the race benefits The Gwen L. Kosinski Foundation ~ Benefiting Brain Tumor Research (GLKF). Since 2002, GLKF and its running club MINDS OVER MATTER have raised approximately $450,000 towards brain tumor research at leading cancer centers in the United States. Most recently, a grant of $75,000 was awarded to Memorial Sloan- Kettering Cancer Center in NYC to combat the reoccurrence of high grade brain tumors. Each year GLKF also continues to award academic scholarships to deserving students entering health related fields and provides assistance to brain tumor patients and their families. It is because of your ongoing generosity and support that GLKF continues to grow and enable us to help so many.

This year, we ask that you GO GREEN and sign up online at our race website glk.kintera.org and create your own sponsorship webpage to help GLKF raise additional monies to combat this devastating disease. The highest fundraisers for March and April will be awarded $100.00 American Express Gift Cards and the participant who raises the most money overall will receive an IPOD Touch courtesy of GLKF. Running t-shirts are guaranteed to all participants who register by April 15th.

In years past this race has brought in over 500 runners and each year our numbers continue to grow. If you can’t make it to the race this year, but would like to support our cause you can donate online at glkfoundation.org, become a corporate sponsor or volunteer! For further information on this event and for details on how to become a corporate sponsor or volunteer please call 917-545-6138 or email mom5k@glk foundation.org.

In advance, we here at GLKF greatly appreciate your generosity in supporting our cause and look forward to seeing you on race day at the finish line!

Sincerely,

The Gwen L. Kosinski Foundation & Minds Over Matter Race Committee

NY Times: Breaching a Barrier to Fight Brain Cancer

| November 17th, 2009 | No Comments »

Recent article in the New York Times – Breaching a Barrier to Fight Brain Cancer by Denise Grady – discusses a new breakthrough technique that threads a microcatheters through the blood vessels in the brain to disperse chemotherapy treatment in a very isolated and precise way.  This helps limit exposure for the rest of the brain to the chemotherapy and targets the tumor for more thorough treatment.

Doctors quoted in the article indicate that this new approach will be particularly helpful with the treatment of glioblastomas, which is one of the deadliest types of tumors, and one that tends to reappear after initial treatments.  A number of clinical trials are underway to explore these new treatment options for brain tumors and one can only hope that additional progress is made in this area.
