NY Times: Breaching a Barrier to Fight Brain Cancer

| November 17th, 2009 | No Comments »

Recent article in the New York Times – Breaching a Barrier to Fight Brain Cancer by Denise Grady – discusses a new breakthrough technique that threads a microcatheters through the blood vessels in the brain to disperse chemotherapy treatment in a very isolated and precise way.  This helps limit exposure for the rest of the brain to the chemotherapy and targets the tumor for more thorough treatment.

Doctors quoted in the article indicate that this new approach will be particularly helpful with the treatment of glioblastomas, which is one of the deadliest types of tumors, and one that tends to reappear after initial treatments.  A number of clinical trials are underway to explore these new treatment options for brain tumors and one can only hope that additional progress is made in this area.
